The topic discussed in the present issue is centered upon the characteristics of the Lamp of the Self-Arisen Sublime Knowledge (shes rab rang byung gi sgron ma). This Lamp is the direct synonym of Awareness (rig pa) and is the state in which the other Lamps of Thögel practice arise naturally. It is interesting to note that, in his commentary on the root-text, Vimalamitra deeply insists on the “knowledge” aspect that characterizes Awareness—in particular the knowledge of the special lexicon of Dzogchen—and that he does not say a word about supposedly sensation-based experiences of Awareness generally advocated by those defining Rigpa as a “presence”.
